Many people are unaware that this unique shopping experience is open to the general public. Smithfield is Britain’s largest wholesale meat market and where many of London’s restaurant owners source their meat. The nocturnal market ( open Monday to Friday ) gives the general public the opportunity to buy top quality meat and poultry at wholesale prices.

The best time to visit is when Smithfield opens for business at 2 am onwards, however, London’s Congestion Charge ensures the market begins to quieten before it’s 7 am start. The cheerful and helpful white coated Butchers and Traders supplying tips and guidance to customers as they shop give the impression they enjoy their jobs despite the unsociable hours they work.

Parking at Smithfield Market

Many regular visitors favour 2 wheeled shopping trolleys to transport their weighty goods back to their cars in the adjacent West Smithfield car park, where fees are very reasonable. On my last market visit in September 2018 I was charged only £1.50 for over 2 hours parking.
